The first mention of mango (Mangifera indica) appeared about 4 thousand years ago. The birthplace of the fruit is considered to be Burma, Eastern India and the Andaman Islands, where its fruits were used as a treat by both poor people and rich gentlemen. The inhabitants of those regions called the fruit "mangkay", which means "great fruit". Portuguese merchants changed the name in their own way, forming a new word - "manga", which is still used today.
